In a culture obsessed with looking and feeling young, it’s no surprise women all over the planet are on a continuous hunt for the secret to the fountain of youth.

We’re here to tell you to call off the search: there is no big secret, and no one has the magic answer. Well, except for Jennifer Aniston – we’re pretty sure she knows something the rest of us don’t, considering how insanely fabulous she looks at age 47. But we digress.

If you’re like the rest of us, your skincare routine is extremely important to you, and that includes your anti-aging game plan. While there is no miracle cream to help you turn the clock back 20 years, there are preventative steps you can take to slow down the aging process.

We spoke with Dr. Nazanin Saedi, a board certified and fellowship trained dermatologist specializing in dermatologic surgery and cosmetic dermatology. She gives us her thoughts on how women can best preserve their skin and ward off wrinkles.

Early Prevention Is Key
Instead of looking for ways to reverse damage, Dr. Saedi suggests working on incorporating preventative measures into your daily skincare routine as early as possible. “The most important step to take when it comes to preventing aging is wearing a quality sunscreen every single day,” she notes. “We hear this a lot but it really is the key.”

And if you think the sunscreen present in your makeup is enough coverage, think again. “I think so many women overlook wearing sunscreen because they think the sunscreen in their foundation is enough. Realistically, those SPF 15 foundations just aren’t as tightly regulated as an actual sunscreen. Find a sunscreen that works for you that you can commit to wearing every day.”

But don’t stop there; Dr. Saedi suggests using a secondary means of prevention in order to fully protect your skin before it’s too late. She recommends that her patients use some sort of retinoid product in addition to their normal skincare regimen. Retinoids minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin’s elasticity, slow down the breakdown of collagen and lighten brown spots that are caused by the sun.

Cover All Your Bases
When it comes to skincare, you can’t skimp; being thorough is one of the best means of defense against aging. “A lot of my patients tend to concentrate on their face and forget about their neck and hands all together,” Saedi says. “This is a big no - no!  In reality, necks and hands give away signs of aging just as much as the face does, so you definitely don’t want to skip this.”

Also, no matter how tired you might be, Dr. Saedi maintains you’ve got to give your skin the proper attention at night. “Too many women skip washing their faces before bed because they’re just too tired. I get it, I’ve been there; but my advice will always be to do it anyway! Your skin will thank you for it in the long run. Removing your makeup at the end of the day and having a product that’s going to go to work for your skin as you sleep is so important.”

So What Now?
If you don’t already have a trusted skincare regimen in place, you should work towards getting one as soon as possible. Dr. Saedi has a few favorite products she recommends to all of her patients.
