Ever since we can remember, we’ve been told that chocolate and fatty foods are the reasons we’re waking up with an enormous zit looking back at us in the bathroom mirror and it's finally time to put that old myth to bed. Instead of focusing on what not to eat, it's important to set your sights on what you should be putting into your body to reap the benefits of smooth, healthy and blemish-free skin. Creams, gels and ointments never hurt but, believe it or not, simply making some small swaps in your daily diet can be the key to clearer skin.

Aside from drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated, be sure to pick up these acne fighting foods during your next grocery trip in order to keep your complexion clean and clear.

Fatty Fish
Since fish is an excellent source of essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, it’s a great way to help reduce inflammation that triggers skin cells to clog pores, resulting in pesky acne. Choose options like salmon, mackerel and sardines to reap the most benefits.

Nuts
That go-to cocktail party snack packs a powerful punch; nuts contain loads of vitamins and minerals that are essential for keeping healthy skin, like vitamin E, copper, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron.

Broccoli
You already know you should be eating plenty of greens, but just make sure broccoli is at the top of the list; it’s known as the perfect skin-clearing food thanks to vitamins A, B, C, E and K, all of which fight radical damage that helps with the luminosity of your skin.

Avocado
Not that we need another reason to dig into our favorite green fruit, but avocados contain vitamin E, which helps increase your skin’s vitality, as well as vitamin C, which naturally combats inflammation and moisturizes your skin.

Artichokes
Full of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C, this pretty green veggie is known to help remove toxins from your body, making it the perfect supplement for maintaining healthy skin.

Brown Rice
High levels of vitamin B, protein, magnesium and antioxidants all combine to act as a stress fighter for your skin, which in turn helps manage your hormone levels resulting in less chances of an annoying breakout.

Garlic
This powerful superfood has a long list of superpowers, one of which is fighting inflammation in the body, killing off harmful bacteria that can wreak havoc on your skin in the process.

Berries and Melons
Adding a variety of colorful melons and berries to your diet — cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and more—helps to boost your immune system, ultimately strengthening your cell walls and protecting yur skin from acne scars.
