Fair-skinned beauty and media darling Emma Stone isn't the first person you’d think of as Hollywood perfect—which is admittedly part of her appeal. Like friend Jennifer Lawrence, her authenticity and humor is continually refreshing. Not only is she relatable when she talks about why she isn’t on social media or how she celebrated her Oscar nomination pj-style with La La Land co-star Ryan Gosling, but her real-talk about acne is spot-on for anyone who’s struggled with breakouts. On top of that, her beauty regimen for clean-glowing skin is surprisingly affordable.
“I'm actually pretty interested in skin care because I had bad hormonal acne when I was 17, and they put me on Accutane for it,” she told Refinery29. She stayed on the medication for about two months, which made her skin particularly dry afterwards and led her to add on extra moisturizer on top of her foundation.
As if that wasn’t enough, during the filming of Easy A, she dealt with a new type of breakout: stress acne. She admits it was was video-airbrushed out of the movie. Stress releases a hormone called cortisol that tells your body to release more pore-clogging oil, according to Prevention.
While sometimes diet can cause breakouts—like dairy, sugar, and simple carbs—Emma’s diet is all in moderation. She balances carbs with protein and eats grilled salmon, banana smoothies, roasted turkey, grilled chicken, tuna and salads as her go-to meals.
So how does she treat breakouts when they do occur?
“Usually, I use tea tree oil,” Stone said. “I can't go too crazy or I'll get a rash. My skin is really sensitive. Whenever it's been really bad, I've gone to the dermatologist to get those cortisone shots.”
And because she is so fair-skinned, a high SPF sunscreen is another a big part of her beauty routine—that and airbrush tans, even though she almost over did it. “I still really like it,” she continued. “But it definitely makes me look like I have leprosy, after a point."
