Cancer Patient Josh Katrick Donates Gift of Free Pizza https://t.co/wmmPvvb8lm— Margie (@paeznyc) December 26, 2016
Josh Katrick loves pizza as much as the next person, but when he won a year's worth of free pizzas from one of his favorite pizza places, he decided to do something a little different - donate his winnings.
Katrick was diagnosed with colon cancer in July and just recently went through his eighth round of chemotherapy to treat the disease. Though he's been eating at Mario's Pizza ever since he was a young boy, the 36-year-old didn't expect to win the contest when over 1,200 people entered.
So when he received word of the cheesy prize he'd just inherited, he immediately asked if he could pay it forward by donating his prize pizzas to a local food bank, according to PEOPLE.
“You know the saying, ‘When life gives you lemons make lemonade, Well, when life gives you pizza, give away a slice,” he said.
The manager at Mario's said Katrick immediately asked if he could give them away.
“We asked the question, ‘Who are you thinking?’ and he said, ‘Northampton Food Bank.’ And it kind of, like, it hit a nerve…in the heart,” said manager Frank Grigoli.
They also said Katrick's good deed would not go unnoticed, and they would make sure he still received his year's worth of pizza, too.
“I thought someone would win, they’d be excited, come in and get their pizzas, but a story like this to come out of a contest like that…” Giuseppe Aiello, the son of the family-run pizzeria’s co-owner, told WFMZ.
Katrick doesn't see it as a big deal, though the people at the food bank are thrilled to have the donations, according to him.
“After everything I went through these last few months — I met so many people and have been receiving so much — I felt I wanted to give back,” Katrick told CNN. “The food bank are very thankful. They’re amazed by it. They will put it to good use.”
