An 18-year-old man was the victim of an awful assault that was filmed and put on Facebook Live.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the victim had “mental health challenges.” He was reported missing by his parents on Monday after being dropped off at a local McDonald’s on Saturday. After his parents hadn’t heard from him, they knew something was wrong. They began receiving mysterious messages claiming their son was being held captive and were later led to the video of him being physically assaulted on video.

The video, which lasts for 28 minutes, shows him with his mouth taped as two suspects, one of which was his classmate, cut his sweater with a knife and verbally attacked him on camera.

They bound the man’s hands and eventually forced him to drink from a toilet as people off camera were heard making racially and politically charged remarks.

According to Cosmopolitan, the man was held captive for up to 48 hours before he was left alone and later taken to the hospital.

"He's traumatized by the incident and it's very tough to communicate with him at this point," Chicago Police Commander Kevin Duffin told the magazine. Police have since identified the suspects as Tesfaye Cooper, 18, Brittany Cointon, 18, and Tanishia Covington, 24. The fourth suspect Jordan Hill, 18, is the only one not from the Chicago area as he resides in Carpentersville, Illinois.

Police reports show the victim went with his classmate and other attackers willingly but it is unknown why.

Police believe the man was targeted because of his special needs rather than his race.
