Warning — spoilers ahead!
This Is Us welcomed viewers back with its winter premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and the show quickly answered a major question that was weighing on fans' minds after the previous episode.
After a few nervous moments, viewers quickly learned that Toby (Chris Sullivan) is, in fact, alive, with Kate (Chrissy Metz) going to visit him in the hospital where he was quietly resting. Toby had suffered a heart attack on Christmas, caused by an arrhythmia, which in turn revealed a more serious health condition. Doctors discovered that Toby's arrhythmia was caused by a tiny hole between two of his heart’s chambers, and while he was initially against undergoing surgery to repair it, he eventually decided to go through with the procedure after telling Kate that he's in love with her.
“You got a dying man to confess his love for you, there are you happy?” he joked before heading to the operating room.
After the surgery, Kate tells Toby, who is pretending to be asleep, that the next logical step for them seems to be marriage. When he "wakes up," he readily agrees.
“I’d marry the hell out of you, Kate Pearson!" he said. "All of this is just life trying to get in the way.”
The night's other emotional turn came courtesy of Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and his father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), after Randall confronted William about why he was becoming distant from the family. In a heartbreaking turn, William revealed that he could feel his cancer becoming worse, and told his son that Jessie (Denis O’Hare) had been helping him “make arrangements” at some of the “best state-funded nursing homes.”
Randall wouldn't hear of it, however, telling his father that he wouldn't let him go anywhere.
“This is your home," he said. "You’ve lived in this home and, if it comes to that, you can die in it.”
