This past Christmas, writer Emily Popp received a rather unusual gift from her brother and his girlfriend — a lipstick that will supposedly cause the wearer to get married within the year.
Popp's brother, Alexander, and his girlfriend, Shiori Haruta, live in Japan, the only place where this particular collection of Estée Lauder lipstick is sold. The “Pure Color Crystal” collection contains multiple colors, and Popp's is called “Crystal Pink Cream.”
After doing some digging on the brand's Japanese website, Popp discovered that the lipstick's mystical powers were indeed discussed by many women, indicated by multiple reviews on the site including the words “marriage,” “dating,” and “husband."
"There’s a lot to take in here," Popp wrote on HelloGiggles. "The notion that it’s on the woman to buy a beauty product to land a man is archaic and heteronormative."
To get a better grasp on the idea behind the lipstick, Popp spoke to Haruta to get the scoop.
“I’m not sure if it works or not, but using a product like this gives women who are feeling pressure much needed confidence," Haruta said. "This then allows them to continue looking for a partner without feeling like their time is running out.”
While it's unconfirmed if the lipstick does indeed have special powers, Haruta's statement seems to indicate that it might be more of a placebo effect — if women believe they will get married after wearing the lipstick, they might begin to feel more confident, and in turn attract a partner who is attracted to that confidence.
All in all, the idea is a bit behind the times, but if something makes you feel good, then that's all the proof you need. And since this lipstick is only available in Japan, take a look at our some of our favorite lipsticks here.
