Actor, Milo Ventimiglia has received quite the acclaim for his portrayal of Pearson family patriarch, Jack Pearson on NBC’s hit This Is Us. But the star’s facial hair might also deserve some credit for its own supporting role.
During the time jumps in the drama’s first season, Ventimiglia sports various looks that help navigate life’s progression over the course of three decades: a full beard, a mustache and a goatee. In Tuesday’s season finale, the star will be sporting a clean-shaven face.
While the 39-year-old star says he’s happy fans appreciate the facial hair over the eras of Jack’s life, he tells USA Today that his favorite might just be the mustache.
“A mustache is OK,” he says. “I grew my beard out, and then I shaved it down to a mustache and everybody on the cast and crew was like, ‘Oh, oh. Hi.’ kind of reacting. Then, when I took the mustache off, I would go back and look at the photos of me with the mustache and I’d go, ‘My God, I had a mustache for seven months.’ OK. Worked for Jack, worked for me.”
Ventimiglia shared that while he wore his own real facial hair in the series pilot, when he shaved down to a mustache, stylists had to add in additional hair for scenes in alternate eras that required a beard or goatee.
As the season went on, “I had enough time to grow my own, so I had my own goatee at the very end.”
One scene that has audiences wondering about is when Ventimiglia stripped down to his birthday suit, literally, in the pilot.
“If my rear end set the internet ablaze, I can’t even imagine what Justin’s ass would do,” he laughs. “Or Sterling’s, I mean, my God — yeah, their moment is definitely coming.”
Ventimiglia values the realism of Jack and Rebecca’s relationship and says the nudity was not a big deal when it came to the context of their relationship.
“I wasn’t so concerned with the fact that my nude rear was going to be displayed to America or the world — here’s a man with his wife in the comfort of their home,” he said.
With the show now on break until season two begins filming, Ventimiglia is giving tonsorial treatments a rest. “In between work, I grow my hair out (and) grow my beard out, because I don't know what I'm playing.”
The season finale of This Is Us airs Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. EST.
