We all know them famously from the acclaimed ‘90s sitcom, Full House where they shared the role of Michelle Tanner. But the truth is the show’s youngest stars, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are quite reclusive from the Hollywood limelight.
Though we’ve watched them flourish over the years as they’ve dabbled in a music, movies, TV shows and now a fashion empire, the Olsens remain pretty silent when it comes to engaging with the media.
But among those lucky enough to chat with the twins most recently was New York Times writer, Matthew Schneier, who uncovered some fascinating facts about Mary-Kate and Ashley in an exclusive interview that revealed a little more than what we knew.

They never shop online
Even though they are the founders of The Row, and Elizabeth and James, the Olsen sisters share that they have never purchased anything online. While Mary-Kate has bought things at an auction, they both admit that the online shopping world’s appeal is not lost on them.
“People like shopping online because they’ve made it so easy,” Mary-Kate told Schneier.
“You don’t have to deal with people,” Ashley laughed.
“That can be unpleasant,” Mary-Kate said. “If you are going to deal with people, you have to make it a pleasant experience.”
The girls are not fans of social media
If you ever wondered if the Olsens were on social media, think again. In an interview with Million Looks, both Mary-Kate and Ashley shared that they don’t believe in social media.
“That gives me so much anxiety,” Mary-Kate said. “We’ve spent our whole lives trying to not let people have that accessibility, so it would go against everything we’ve done in our lives to not be in the public.”
They are ‘sororal’ twins
It might have been hard to tell them apart as kids, but as they got older, it was more evident. In case you missed the memo, Mary-Kate and Ashley are fraternal twins or “sororal twins” as females are known, with Ashley being two minutes older.
Many clients of their fashion line have no idea about their famous child star status
It might be a little weird to think that since “You got it dude!” has a been a staple in our ‘90s cultural nostalgia, but the twins tell NYT’s Schneier that many of their clients are “decades older than [them],” and more likely to have children or grandchildren who are familiar with Michelle Tanner’s antics.
First twins to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Thanks to a productive career in a short span, Hollywood got two stars for the price of one as the then 17-year-old twins shared a marker on the Walk of Fame in 2004. At the time, each twin was estimated to be worth $150 million.
Youngest producers in history
During their run on Full House, the Olsen twins came out with a slew of films for their younger audience. They became so successful that the two could afford a chance to experiment and became the youngest producers in history after doing work on one of their films at the age of six.
Mary-Kate loves the scent of coffee
In an interview with ELLE, Mary-Kate shared how she loves the scent of coffee because it gives her the “warm and fuzzies.”
“It feels like a part of my childhood,” she said. It was something that I smelled a lot. It just reminds me of having a routine in the morning.”
Ashley has hidden beauty talents
The girls told ELLE, that they love to dabble with beauty products as Ashley shares she is pretty good at doing other people’s makeup.
“I think after getting my makeup done for so many years I’m pretty good at that,” she said. “My friend actually also made me cut her hair the other day and that didn't look too bad either. She had long hair, too. It was down to here [gestures to her belly button] and I cut it up to here [points to just below her shoulder]. She made me do it, but it looks great. I made it a blunt, A-line haircut. And then we had a professional come in after and clean it up a bit! But it was pretty good on its own.”
But Mary-Kate jokes she’s a bit behind, saying, “I feel like I just learned how to brush my hair last week.”
They have two more siblings
While sister, Elizabeth gained fame on own, the twins also have a brother. Trent is a year older than both of them and reportedly toyed with the idea of getting into acting. A childhood friend told the New York Post that he loves to “prank” his sisters and once sold their autographs for pocket change in elementary school. Proof that entrepreneurship runs in the family!
They’re in love with love
Though Mary-Kate has been married for one year to French banker, Olivier Sarkozy, the half-brother of former president of France, Nicholas Sarkozy, she and her sister, Ashley have quite the extensive dating life.
Before getting hitched, Mary-Kate dated the likes of Dustin Yellin, David Katzenberg, Max Winkler and rumored beau, the late Heath Ledger.
While her sister is not married, Ashley was once engaged to actor, Justin Bartha. Unfortunately, their engagement only lasted three months after dating for two years. Now she has found love with 58-year-old financier and art collector Richard Sachs, who she has told The Edit, has helped her learn how to unwind.
