On season 3 of HGTV's Fixer Upper, Joanna Gaines transformed a Waco, Texas barn into a gorgeous retreat nicknamed the "Barndominium," but the home quickly became the subject of controversy after Kristi Bass, a real estate investor who owns the property, was forced to cease operations in October after being denied a permit to be used as a vacation rental, The Waco Tribune reports.

Now, the home is in the news again after Bass' second permit request was denied by the town this week after council members expressed concern about Bass’ “total disregard” for city ordinances as well as zoning rules, as the area surrounding the Barndominium is zoned residential.

“The citizens have come forward and made it quite clear they are against it and have not wavered from that. I feel like we need to stick with the standard,” said council member Patrick Bell.

“You can’t change the rules of the game in the middle of the game. . . . I find it a misuse of fiduciary and judicial responsibility,” Bass told The Waco Tribune. “None of these issues were even brought to the council until a resident was on the council and made issue of it.”

Mayor Calvin Hodde was the only member to vote to approve Bass' application.

"I just kind of felt like it's a shame we couldn't find a common ground here," he said. "I think given a chance the Barndominium could be a really good thing. I think once everybody kind of settled down a little and it was given a chance, it would have been fine and people might meet some interesting folks."

Bass said she has “plenty of options” moving forward.

"Unfortunately, when I'm called to a fight, I'll show up," she said. "I didn't want to go this direction. I tried to give an olive branch."

Bass will appear in court in April to address two citations she received when she reportedly continued to run the property as a rental without the proper permit.
