Now that One Direction is on hiatus, the boy band field is wide open for a new group to swoop in and claim the hearts of America's tweens. If ABC has anything to say about it, that new group might come from primetime TV.

Variety reports that the network has ordered a 10-episode series of Boy Band, which will pit singers against each other for the chance to join the new group.

As One Direction got its start on British competition show The X Factor, it's not hard to imagine that this new series could potentially produce a successful group, although the format of each show is different.

While no judges or hosts have been announced, sources say ABC has reached out to former boy band and girl band members for their involvement. The judges will reportedly be called “architects” and will serve as mentors to the contestants, who will compete for spots in the group and a recording contract with Hollywood Records.

ABC previously attempted to launch several singing competitions with failed shows Duets in 2012 and Sing Your Face Off and Rising Star in 2014.
