On a recent trip to Las Vegas, the Sons of Anarchy star opened up about his first marriage to fellow actress, Katharine Towne whom he met during an audition for Dawson’s Creek.
But the 37-year-old admits that more than a decade later, their 1999 marriage wasn’t his fondest memory.
“The first time I was ever in Vegas, I got married, which didn’t turn out that well,” he told the Associated Press. “I’d known the girl for three weeks and we’d fallen madly in love.”
Just 18 at the time, Hunnam and Towne traveled to Vegas to get married after the two shared the same thought, “What if we never see each other again?”
Wild and free in their formative years, the two felt to remedy their concerns by getting married. While Hunnam had his doubts about whether or not they’d be able to wed since they couldn’t even be served drinks at such a young age, the two ended up walking down the aisle at 2 a.m. in the famous Silver Bell Wedding Chapel.
After just three years, Hunnam and Towne divorced in 2002.
“Three terrible years,” admitted Hunnam. “Three terrible, painful, expensive years. I got the cats at the end of it, so that was good. There was a small victory.”
While the actor wasn’t lucky in love early on at such a tender age, he’s since found a steady romance with his current girlfriend, jewelry designer Morgana McNelis. The two have been dating since 2005 with no signs of stopping.
