Laurer left the message for Erik Angra, who was filming a documentary about her life, and seemed to indicate that she was doing well.
“I am doing much better," Laurer said in the message.
“It’s a beautiful day outside,” she continued. “All the sailboats are out today, it’s a beautiful day.”
Laurer also discussed her intent to go to a rehabilitation center in Malibu.
“I go for two weeks and drink cucumber juice and whatever, and swim around," she said. "I can get a therapy doggy the right way.”
According to a coroner's report, the wrestler had ingested painkillers oxycodone and oxymorphone, as well as valium, nordiazepam and temazepam before her death.
“That voicemail, when I heard it, I was very excited,” Angra told People. “She, for the first time, admitted she had a problem… Sadly, that was the last time anybody heard from her.”
The film, titled Wrestling With Chyna, includes the wrestler discussing her drug use.
“I hope that people can see the signs of people who are going through addiction,” Angra said. “They look strong, and they look tough, but celebrities and artists are some of the most sensitive people in the world.”
Wrestling With Chyna is tentatively scheduled for release this fall.
