Simone Biles will smile when she feels like smiling, thank you very much.
The Olympic gymnast delivered a serious
While receiving a not-so-glowing critique from the judges after her second dance Monday night, Biles was given a bit of harsh feedback from judge Carrie Ann Inaba, along with some encouragement.
Host Tom Bergeron asked Biles why the more positive comments didn't make her smile, Biles replied, "Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals."
She later talked about the moment in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, sharing that she's struggled to understand what the judges want to see from her over the course of the season.
"I feel like everyone has their own opinion, clearly, and I feel it's just how you take it," Biles said, adding that she tries her best to emote during her performances.
"I feel like I am trying, I am being honest, but if they don't see that, I don't know what more I can do," she explained.
"I had tears in my eyes," she recalled. "I almost ran to the bathroom at one point, but I pulled it together."
