As much as we would like to believe that these summer months bring with them the ability to alleviate our stress and anxiety, the truth of the matter is summer is just another opportunity to overload ourselves with errands, work and and familial obligations! Even our attempts to keep up our bikini-ready bods can fall prey to those all-encompassing cravings that stress can bring about (chocolate, anyone?). Luckily for us, we have a built-in mechanism for stress relief: sex! Rather than letting all those anxieties overwhelm you, try setting aside your go-to methods for relaxation and indulging in some other, slightly more carnal pleasures instead! If you are ready to crank up the heat and turn off those stressors, take a look at these simple steps to spice up your sex life.
Stick to a healthy diet. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know you've heard it all when it comes to eating healthy, but consuming the right kinds of foods can go a long way in boosting your energy and your self esteem. Pack your daily meals full of proteins, fruits and veggies, and healthy carbs to restore your energy, reduce your stress levels, and shave off those last few lingering pounds! We're not talking extreme dieting, here; just stick to those healthy eating essentials and you will feel better in no time!
Exercise regularly. We have no intention of beating a dead horse here, but the importance of incorporating a regular exercise regiment into your schedule is essential to sprucing up your sex life. Similar to maintaining a healthy diet, exercising on a regular basis will help you relieve stress, boost those happy hormones, and help you feel better about your body. If you can manage three workouts a week, you will be shocked by the positive effects movement can have on you, physically and mentally.

Try to get enough sleep. Seven to eight hours a night should help relieve your stress and give you enough energy to roll through your day! If you are one of those moms who just can't seem to sit still for that long, then we highly recommend a power nap or two throughout the day (20 to 30 minutes will give you a restorative boost to keep you rolling!). Sleep is essential on so many levels, so don't let it slip through the cracks this summer!
Don't overwhelm yourself. We always get it into our heads that summer is a time of restoration and reinvigoration, but when it comes down to it, these handful of months fly by for a reason! Jobs, playdates, family reunions, and extracurricular activities have a way of dominating our lives, so we recommend keeping a scheduler or calendar on hand. Keeping track of everything that is going on, and making sure your days do not get too overwhelming is key to reducing stress and preserving your precious energy for a roll in the hay at the end of the day!
Connect emotionally. It can be tempting to throw caution to the wind and jump straight in bed, but one of the best ways to nurture a physical relationship with your partner is to connect with them emotionally. Set aside some time for a glass of wine and conversation. Children are a blessing, of course, but new babies can definitely contribute to a divide between parents if they don't work to express their struggles and stressors.
Set the mood. Sex can feel a little empty if you don't take the time to loosen up and get comfortable with your partner. A little music, some lightly scented candles, sensual massages, and foreplay may sound a bit cliche, but they are wonderful ways to forget about the stress of your day and concentrate on getting into the right mood.
Be patient. Sure, sex is one of the most natural acts we partake in, but it can take some time to get back in the groove of things. Reconnecting with your partner may take longer than an afternoon, and stress doesn't just disappear overnight! Keeping an open communication and rebooting your relationship on an emotional and physical level may not happen right away, so stick with it!
