When you were little and on your family vacation to the beach, did you use the wet sand to exfoliate? Little You probably didn’t even know the importance of exfoliation at that age — but your older cousin Tina told you that it worked wonders, and you didn’t want to appear to be out of the loop.

Scrubs, bath bombs and aromatherapy are all the rage right now, but breaking the bank isn’t necessary for luscious and sexy skin. To make most skin scrubs, you need two main parts: something gritty to scour away dead skin cells, and something oily to make it spreadable and to moisturize the skin.

Making your own skin scrub will be too simple: You'll use sparse ingredients, and your scrub can be customized with optimal ingredients to suit your skin type and aroma preferences. If you’re interested in natural alternatives to bath and body care, give some of these mixes a try! Best guess is that you have most of these ingredients tucked away in your cabinets.

Note: Use skin scrubs only once or twice a week, because scrubs can really irritate the skin if used daily.

1. DIY Cinna-Coffee Scrub: The antioxidants in coffee, plus the stimulating caffeine content, help tighten the skin and even reduce the appearance of cellulite. Caffeine dilates blood vessels that will temporarily tone skin tissue, and antioxidants fight cancer-causing free radicals in the skin! Adding cinnamon to the mixture will also help boost blood circulation and tighten skin. For this recipe you will need to mix together these ingredients until they form a paste:

  • ¼ cup melted coconut oil (or any base oil of your choosing: olive, grape seed and avocado work great too)
  • ¼ cup freshly ground coffee
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

First, wash your body normally. Then, use about two quarters-size of the paste and scrub your arms, torso, legs and face (carefully avoiding the eyes) for a few minutes, and leave the paste on for a few minutes to allow the coffee grounds to work their magic. The oil will keep your “new skin” soft and moisturized, and the grounds will work to tighten problem spots of cellulite and stretch marks! Wipe away with warm water.

2. DIY Lemon-Basil Sugar Scrub: Use this lemon-basil sugar scrub and you will leave the bathroom feeling undeniably bright! The lemon juice has tons of vitamin C that, when applied topically, will help even out your skin tone, tighten pores, promote collagen formation and mitigate the effects of free radicals. (via Life Extension) The honey will hydrate the skin, and also has antibacterial properties that will prevent future acne breakouts! For this scrub, combine these ingredients together until a thick paste forms:

  • juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh basil
  • ⅓ cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ¼ cup base oil (coconut, olive, grape seed, avocado, etc.)

Wash your body normally, then apply two quarters-sized amount of the paste to your body, paying extra attention to the hands, face, feet and elbows. This scrub will leave you feeling energized and stress-free!

3. DIY Lavender Salt Scrub: Using some coarse sea salt and lavender essential oil, this scrub is the epitome of relaxation. Adding a few drops of lavender essential oil will moisturize the skin and scare away bad bacteria (research even shows that use of lavender essential oil reduces eczema and acne breakouts). The intoxicating aromas will invigorate your pores and delight your senses! For this scrub, combine the following ingredients:

  • ¼ cup base oil (coconut, olive, grape seed, avocado, etc.)
  • ¼ cup kosher (coarse) salt
  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil

When you are ready to unwind after a long week, use this scrub on your skin for two-three minutes, scrubbing in gentle circular motions. Leave it on your skin for a few more minutes, then wipe away with warm water. This scrub is gentle and tranquil enough to use before bedtime… you will feel detoxified and unquestionably nourished.

Used on a weekly basis, these scrubs will alleviate dry and cracked skin, and in its place leave a silky and vibrant dermis!
