One Personal Trainer Shares Her Healthy Morning Routine

Today, we're talking to Brooke Griffin about how she starts her crazy busy days with her 5-year-old son Easton.

Question: How do you normally start your mornings?

Brooke Griffin: I always wake up 30 minutes before my little guy wakes up, or 30 minutes before I have to start my day, because I like to have my time to collect my thoughts and get my time in order. I have a devotion that I like to do every day. I’m a big coffee drinker, so I drink that while I’m doing my devotion. And then I’ll make a healthy breakfast for me and Easton, and get both of us ready before we head out the door.

Q: How do you get breakfast on the table for Easton before school?

BG: He actually likes to eat, which is good. He’s an eater! I try to do something healthy every day. He loves cereal and oatmeal, and I always try to do a fruit too. He gets to watch one show when he eats — please, moms, don’t judge me — but that’s our thing! He gets to eat and watch his show. He’s obsessed with Power Rangers right now.

Q: Do you work out in the morning?

BG: It kind of depends on the day. Tuesdays and Thursdays, because of my schedule, I have to work out in the mornings, but then Mondays and Wednesdays, and it depends on Fridays, my workouts usually come before I pick up Easton in the afternoon. So it all goes back to fitting everything in. For me, I have to be really focused on a plan, to make sure that I have my days in a place where I can get everything done.

Q: You’ve spoken before about Power Planning Sundays, so we know it’s important to plan your dinners for the week to reach your healthy lifestyle goals. Is it just as important to plan your breakfasts?

BG: I love Power Planning Sundays because I can get all my meals for the week planned out, meaning my lunches that I take to work, and my dinners. For things like breakfast, I kind of am pretty routine with it. I love oatmeal and I love eggs. I make an egg white omelet and oatmeal, and that’s what I have almost every single day with a cup of coffee. I’m pretty simple like that. If I’m running short on time, I’ll do a protein shake that I can take in the car, but those are always my morning breakfasts.

Q: What’s your favorite healthy weekday breakfast if you have a little extra time in the morning?

BG: I love protein pancakes. So if I do have a little extra time, that’s what I’ll go to. And there are so many other good recipes from the website that you can make too!

Q: Favorite healthy weekend breakfast?

BG: We do brunch a lot in my family after church on Sundays. So I make frittatas, and then another big hit with the family is the Italian Breakfast Casserole.
