At the end of a long day, the last thing you want to do is exercise. You want to sink back into the couch and watch HGTV for as long as possible before the kids start screaming your name. Finding time to exercise can be daunting, especially when your life is already so busy. So why not combine your TV time with a quick workout? During every commercial break, follow our chart and perform the corresponding moves. Another funny Geico commercial? Do those pushups until the commercial is over! Suddenly you won't feel so bad about sneaking in an episode or two.
Food Commercial: Plank
Don't let yourself get distracted by those sizzling images from Red Lobster — and don't you dare think about their cheese biscuits! Instead, focus hard on the workout at hand: the plank. This challenging move is really going to work your core. Make sure to keep your body in a straight, diagonal line. Don't sacrifice form! For more information on the plank, click here.
Commercial With a Celebrity: Jumping Jacks
You look Sophia Vergara in the eye when she tries to sell you Pantene — and keep jumping! While this move is pretty self explanatory (we all took an elementary school gym class after all), make sure to follow the correct form. Jump up and raise your arms above your head, while simultaneously kicking your legs out to the sides. You should form an “x.” Without taking a break, quickly reverse the movement and repeat. You got this! For more info on the jumping jack, click here.
Funny Commercial: Pushups
We know what you're thinking: "This commercial better be short and sweet!" But the longer the commercial, the more calories you'll burn, especially with this classic move that works the triceps and biceps. If you're a beginner, modifying the pushup is fine. Perform this move on your hands and knees and decrease the range of motion. Remember to keep your back straight! To read more about pushups in our fitness index, click here.
Clothing Store Commercial: Plank
Let this commercial motivate you. Why? Because after this workout, you'll be one step closer to looking amazing in that dress from Modcloth. As you perform the plank, make sure to keep your body in a straight line. For more information on the plank, click here!
Hair Commercial: Jog in Place
Pantene, L'Oréal, Dove, the list goes on and on. Get ready to work up a sweat, because hair commercials are one of the most frequent on television. Are you not feeling anything? Amp up your speed and add high knees to the mix. You'll definitely feel it now! Click here for more tips on jogging in place and high knees.
Makeup Commercial: Squats
You're about to feel the burn big time. The great thing about squats is that they work the body part we want to look bigger — our butts. Let that be your motivation as you commit to a minute of high intensity squatting. See step-by-step squat instructions here.
TV Show Promo: Pushups
If there's one thing television stations like to do, it's self-promote. We know what you're thinking: "this promo better be short and sweet!" But the longer the promo the more calories you'll burn, especially with this classic move that works the triceps and biceps. If you're a beginner, modifying the pushup is fine. Perform this move on your hands and knees and decrease the range of motion. Remember to keep your back straight. To read more about pushups in our Fitness Index, click here!
Movie Trailer: Mountain Climbers
These bad boys are sure to get you sweating just in time for Chris Hemsworth to come on the screen (of course). Don't let his gorgeous face distract you, however. Really focus on form with this move. Your body should be in a straight, diagonal line from your head to your heels before you bring your right knee forward under your chest, with the toes just off the ground. Return to plank position. Switch legs, bringing the left knee forward. Keep alternating legs and pick up the pace until it feels a little like running in place in a plank position. Your core and glutes will thank you later when you're too sore to get out of bed. Remember that each sore morning means you're one step closer to your fitness goals! Check out this move in our fitness index.
Fitness Commercials: Sit-ups
For many, sit-ups are a quick and easy workout. If that's you, throw your workout into overdrive and see how many you can complete before the commercial is over. Then next time try and beat your record! Avoid arching your back, and if you feel tension in your neck check out our fitness index to make sure you're doing this move correctly. If this move is too difficult, try a modification. All you have to do is lift your upper back and shoulders in mini-crunches. You'll still feel the burn!
