Chrissy Metz has come a long way since she was a teen.
In a powerful letter to her younger self, shared with People, the This Is Us star opened up about feeling confident and trying to fit in, noting that while her journey to who she is today was a tough one, she was able to push through with plenty of heart and courage.
Read on for the powerful advice the actress gave her teenage self.
"Hey, Girl, Hey!" the star began. "You are just as important and beautiful as Amy, the most gorgeous cheerleader in your entire school, even if your hair isn’t the perfect natural shade of honey blonde or because your clothes aren’t from Guess or that your curves look VERY different from hers."
"Contrary to the bill of goods you’ve been sold, life is not a competition. Stop comparing yourself to anyone or anything," she continued. "We are all on our own journey and YOU are the driver. There will be bumps in the road, detours to be taken and pit stops will have to be made, but you’ve got to fill ‘er up and keep going. You will lose your map, but never your intuition."
Metz has been open about her experience with body-shamers in the past and is hoping to be one of the celebrities in Hollywood redirecting the conversation.
“It’s concerning because it’s more about the mental, being unhealthy mentally and emotionally," Metz shared about body-shaming in the past. "That’s what’s concerning. I don’t know their plight, I don’t know their issues and it’s very easy to say 'oh she’s too skinny' or you hear people say that I’m too fat or I’m too whatever. So I would hope that there’s conversations about it."
The emotional reading of her latest essay seems like a direct response to those negative comments.
In her essay, she gives her younger self, and young women everywhere, invaluable advice.
"Allow every smile, frown and town you drive through to open your mind, but never close your heart," Metz concluded. "One day you will appreciate the upgrade of that cruise control but never take your eye off that winding road you have paved by being courageously you!"
