Womanista Beauty: Beating Blemishes

Ok, so obviously this isn’t the sexiest topic to discuss. But if you are like me and you are past your teen years and still breaking out (ugh! So annoying) then you are looking for products that WORK. I have literally tried everything under the sun – from over-the-counter to prescription products.

Another thing to consider when treating breakouts? Seasonal changes. Once cold weather hits, my skin care regimen changes as well. The good news is, After checking out hundreds of products (seriously, hundreds) at all price points, I’ve found a few that get real results!

SkinCeuticals Adult Anti-Acne System: This kit is a dream. It focuses on what causes acne for adults (like me!) rather than just busting excess oil production. Plus, it also fights wrinkles with an alpha hydroxy-packed serum.

This 3-product pack is full of powerful ingredients to reduce the size of pores, smooth skin, fight fine lines and wrinkles, and prevent acne. It’s a little pricey at $125, but it lasts for a long time and gets results!

Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10, Maximum Strength: My husband swears by this product. It is a 10% benzoyl peroxide cream that doesn’t require a prescription (hooray!)

Persa-Gel 10 zaps zits overnight and you can apply it up to three times a day. It also isn’t as drying as other products, despite the high concentration of benzoyl peroxide. One side note to consider – it can bleach pillow cases, towels, and shirts, so keep that in mind (if you don’t want your lavender pillowcase to suddenly have a bleached out blotch!)

Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser: This foaming cleanser is gentle enough to use twice a day, but really packs a blemish-fighting punch. I love a foam cleanser because the suds really make me feel like I’m cleaning every inch of my face.

The soy in this cleanser also soothes any inflamed areas of your face, and fights blotchiness and redness. It’s a great everyday cleanser with great value! You can pick it up for less than $7.

The Clarisonic Mia: This cleansing brush is AMAZING. I use it once a day and it absolutely rocks. Your skin will never be cleaner and it wipes away bacteria like nobody’s business. I seriously swear by it.

So what about you, womanistas? Any acne-fighting products that you love?

xo, the Womanista

I also swear by the Persa-Gel! I use it even when I don’t have breakouts, just on my problem areas, as a preventative measure. The Clarisonic works wonders but for me it is too harsh to use every day. I use every other day and on days I work out. Thanks Womanista for the ideas!

On another note, I found that my skin has never looked better after I started using a BB cream instead of foundation – I love Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream.

I love the Murad product line. I’ve tried everything else and it’s the only thing that has worked. They have one specific for Acne and it really helps my skin. I also love my Clarisonic brush!

Cara – I know a few people who swear by Murad! I’ve yet to try it, but it’s on my list. Thanks for sharing! xo

The Skinceuticals kit sounds great! I used Proactiv for a while, and it worked pretty well until one day my skin went crazy. I went to see an aestitician and she said that Proactiv basically breaks down your skin’s ability to fight bacteria, so it will work for a while, and then your skin will break out worse than before! Now, I’m trying to get back on a normal regimen by using Cetaphil cleanser and Tazorac with retina a. Chemical peels also really help too (I go to Belle Meade Dermatology to get them). Thanks for posting this! I agree it’s not a sexy topic but it’s comforting to know other people struggle with it! :)

Thanks for your feedback, Aileen! I have done a vi peel and loved the results, too. My derm preaches using a retin A product, but tazorac has been too irritating for me in the past, so I stick to over the counter stuff. Glad we are all in this (annoying) fight together! xo

I love skinCeuticals and typically will wait for a 20% off sale at Private Edition or other stores in Nashville to stock up. I have had great results with the resurfacing serum!
