I met Hillary Scott on January 20th, 2007. I remember the exact date because it’s also the day that I met my husband (her fabulously handsome, smart, and kind bandmate, Charles Kelley) So over the past six years, we’ve gotten to share plenty of highs, a few lows, lots of laughs, beauty secrets, relationship advice, and fun times (we’ve snorkeled together in Jamaica, karaoked in Copenhagen, and sipped cocktails overlooking Sydney Harbour!)
On the eve of her latest album release (Golden hits stores TODAY! Make sure to pick up a copy!), this Womanista had the pleasure of chatting up Lady Antebellum’s leading lady and got her to dish on glowing skin, her chic momma-to-be wardrobe, her favorite date nights, and what she wants her fans to know about being beautiful.
Your skin always looks glowing! Take us through your skincare routine. Does anything change when you are on the road?
Well, first off, thank you! I have just recently gotten into a routine that I’ve become religious about. I used La Mer cleansing foam on my Clairsonic brush morning and night followed by La Mer Moisturizing Lotion and La Mer The Eye Concentrate. I use Neutrogena makeup wipes to get off my eye makeup after shows, and then the above routine.
How do you keep your hair from getting unruly when you are performing during the hot summer months?
I’ve fallen in love with Oribe products. They have a great anti-humidity spray, and I also love their dry texturing spray. (*Womanista side note: I LOVE the Oribe dry texturizing spray too!! It’s hair heaven in a bottle!)
What spring makeup trends are you loving?
I always love to use fun, bright colors on my eyes in the spring.
You have traveled all around the world – have any of those different cultures influenced your style? If so, how?
I definitely feel like my almost all-black wardrobe works well in the UK – and I always seem to find amazing pieces to add to my collection when I’m there.
Now that you are expecting your daughter (woohoo!) what has been the most fun thing about dressing your baby bump? Any great staples in your pregnancy wardrobe that you want to share with other expectant moms?
In the beginning months of pregnancy, it’s all about proportion. Your midsection and bust changes pretty quickly (or at least it did for me), so longer, loose fitting shirts with a great leather jacket or a blazer, and black leggings were my best friend. The blazer or jacket help define whats left of your disappearing waistline – Ha! That’s still my go-to outfit now that I’m in the 3rd trimester. My favorite maternity jeans have been Citizens of Humanity and Hudson. A Pea In The Pod has tons of great maternity options that don’t make you feel like your wardrobe has to suffer. Definitely check them out!
What’s your favorite date night outfit?
Chris and I, for the most part, are very casual. He loves me the most with my hair pulled back, with little or no makeup on, in my favorite jeans chowing down on pub food & catching the current NBA game on TV (my husband’s choice of course). When we do go on a fancy date, I normally wear a soft feminine top with skinny jeans, minimal accessories, and my Chanel ballet flats. I really try to keep the heels off unless I’m on stage or on red carpets.
Many of your fans are young girls who are growing up in a world bombarded by unrealistic images of “beauty” – what message would you like to share with them about what it means to be beautiful?
Beauty begins from within. I know everyone says that, but let me tell you why I feel that way. The moments where I’ve truly felt the most beautiful, in the purest sense of the word, have been when I’m not dolled up in professional hair and makeup, on stage, or just celebrating a rare fabulous hair day (even though I do enjoy those days, ha!). They’ve been in the middle of precious memories being made, and when my focus has been on who I am trying to become on the inside. A better version of who I was yesterday. Some examples are my honeymoon, serving God by serving my family in Haiti, and girl time with my closest friends. Reflecting back on those days, I never remember looking in the mirror, sucking in my gut, or fishing for a compliment (which we all do, admit it! ha!)
As women, I feel we are pressured into not only thinking, but BELIEVING that we must be drop dead gorgeous, in perfect shape, blemish-free faced “shells of people” who are deemed “beautiful” based purely on one dimension. How about we strive to be multi-dimensionally beautiful women!?!? Strong, healthy, beautiful, and REAL! (*Another Womanista side note: AMEN, SISTA!)
Now that we are approaching summer, what are your favorite summertime activities?
Cookouts with friends, and pool time!!!
What’s your favorite summer vacation spot?
I’m a beach girl to the core, so anywhere with white sand and blue water!
Your new album “Golden” is out today! What are you excited to share with your fans about the new music?
This album is an honest representation of where we are in our lives artistically, personally, and professionally! I think you’ll hear new things from us, but not without a familiar undertone. We chose every song for a purpose, and we hope you enjoy it.
