Womanista Beauty: Red Lips

I have always been a fan of a perfect red lip. It exudes glamour and chicness and there is something about a woman who wears red lipstick that is just fabulous. That woman is confident & beautiful!

I am not, however, masterful when it comes to creating a gorgeous red look on my pout! About a year ago I got some help from Celebrity Makeup Artist (and seriously y’all, she is an ARTIST!) Terri Apanasewicz.

She told me that in order to create a bold, beautiful look on your lips, you had to define the “outline” and corners of your mouth. If you skip this step, sometimes you end up with messy, “feathered” color. Score! Lip liner  & a lip brush it is…

From there I found my favorite, bold, uber-glam reds. Let’s rock this look with confidence, womanistas!

The Perfect “Screen Siren” Pout:

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in “Ruby Woo”  This one is simply gorgeous. The coral-red hue is universally flattering and works with pretty much all skin tones.

It is one of my favorite reds (and I’m a medium-skinned blond) and it looks equally fabulous on Ms. Dita Von Teese, who is raven-haired and fair-skinned. Its long-wearing matte finish is perfect for a long, glamorous evening.

The Perfect “Hint” of Color -

Tarte Cosmetics LipSurgence natural lip tint in “Lust” This is the perfect lip stain when you want the look of a pretty red lip, without the full commitment of a red lipstick.

This luxurious lip tint is silky and rich and moisturizes your lips as you wear it. The color is a pretty poppy that is also universally flattering – but isn’t too bold. It will leave your pout with the perfect hint of color!

The “All-Star” Drugstore Pick -

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in “Love That Red”  This iconic lipstick first hit stores in 1951, and ladies who love their red are still picking it up in droves. I remember trying on this particular color of red courtesy of my mom’s makeup drawer when I was a little girl.

The reason for it’s staying power in a competitive beauty market? It perfectly balances cool and warm red tones and looks good with any other color, lighting, skin tone. Plus, it has the most subtle hint of shimmer that adds infinite glam. Basically, you can’t go wrong with this one. And it’s just $8!

What about you womanistas, do you like to rock bold red lips? Who are some of your favorite red-lipped red carpet starlets?

xo, the Womanista

I love these suggestions!! I know this is off topic, but what shadow color and brand do you recommend for hazel eyes ? I prefer drugstore brand please. Thank you!!

Hey Jenna! The rule of thumb to make your eyes really pop is to use a shadow color that is opposite the color wheel from your natural eye color (ie, purple/lilac shadows for green eyes/hazel eyes) Here is a great article that goes into more detail… http://www.fabsugar.com/Eyeshadow-101-Todays-Theme-Purple-12395

Will you tell us how to “define the outline and corners” of our mouths? Thanks and LOVE your blog =)

Hey Caroline! thanks so much for reading :-) You should use lip liner to outline the cupids bow on your top lip, as well as where the outer corners of your lips come together. From there, you should use a lip brush to blend the color in those areas, so that it looks very defined. Does that make sense? Maybe I’ll get Terri to create a “how to” video for us! xo

Another great one is NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella. It’s a chubby pencil and is super easy to apply. Perfect matte red.
