Womanistas, I have been SO excited to share this with you! Back in June, DIY Network rolled into Nashville and spent three days vamping up our pool house to give my husband his own “chill” space – his own “Man Cave”! It was SUCH a fun experience, and the man cave turned out better than I could have ever imagined.
The Man Cave was a surprise for my husband. He works really hard and travels a lot, so I wanted him to have a space in our new home that was relaxed and dude-friendly (because, admittedly there are a few rooms in our house that are glitz and glam and not exactly a space where he can put his feet up, watch tv, and have a beer…)
Contractor Jason Cameron, NFL Legend Tony Siragusa, and the “Man Caves” team created a cool and cozy space for him, that is still chic and airy (since it is a pool house, afterall…) It is seriously awesome.
The pace that the team builds and films this show is pretty crazy. They LITERALLY did everything in 3 days. Seriously. I’m talking demolition, getting materials, building, and staging/primping. It’s warp speed when it comes to construction (I know because we also just renovated our house at what I thought was warp speed…and then I filmed man caves and realized how truly crazy their pace is!)
While the team was building, I went with the lead designer on the show, Marissa (who is fabulous and talented!), to Mission Stone & Tile in Nashville to pick out some cool tile for the bar area in the man cave. We went with a cool “Beveled Arabesque” for the back wall behind the bar (yes, I realize this isn’t SUPER man cave-ish, but it works really well in the space!) We also selected an irridescent mosaic tile. It adds a cool texture and “swank” feel to the front of the bar.
After a successful stop at Mission Stone & Tile, Marissa and I headed to Nashville Granite & Marble to pick out some bar counter top slabs, as well as bar-area fixtures (cabinet pulls, a bar sink, faucet, etc).
Since we wanted something durable yet still a little rugged, we zeroed in on Soapstone & Limestone slabs. Both are cool and earthy, and get an interesting patina over use and time. Ultimately we liked the limestone better, and picked out this slab.
From there, the team went to work and everything turned out so so great! I even helped build a few things (which I was SHOCKED that any sort of construction project was in my repertoire!) The big reveal was on June 6th, which also happened to be the day we moved into our house, which also happened to be the day of the CMT Awards (we clearly like to have lots going on at once!) You’ll have to tune in tonight to see what our finished man cave looks like. The episode airs on DIY Network at 10/9 cst. Happy viewing!
