Womanista Fashion: Rent The Runway

I have the super fun task of attending a few award shows each year with my husband and his band. (Next up? Womanista does the CMA Awards!) It’s always fun to get dressed up, have someone fix your hair and makeup, wear some glam jewels, and drink a glass of champagne with friends. I get asked a lot “So, do all these cool designers send you free gorgeous dresses to wear? Do you have Gucci on speed dial?” The short answer is…umm, no.

I pick out each dress for every award show myself, and I pay for each one (there have been a few exceptions to this, but for the most part…womanista is left to her own red carpet devices!) As you can imagine, while this is totally awesome, it can get a little stressful and expensive. BUT, a few years ago I found my red carpet fashion savior: Rent The Runway!!

Rent The Runway is a website that let’s you wear couture, and costco prices. InStyle Magazine described it as “Like Netflix, but for fabulous dresses and accessories…” Need a great cocktail dress for your friend’s engagement party? You can rent this fabulous LBD from Diane von Furstenberg for $50! Need a knock-out gown for a cool art opening? This one from Carlos Miele should do the trick (for only $125!) I’m also dying to wear this gorge Erin Featherston confection – it’s perfect for a beach vacation date night. Bottom line? It’s the easiest way to look your best, on a shoestring budget.

The concept is so easy, and super awesome. You find the dress you like (along with some fabulous accessories!) and RTR ships it to you to keep for four days. They also send it with a pre-paid envelope so that you can easily send it back when you are done. No need to dry clean. It’s that simple. Plus, if you aren’t sure what size will work for you, you can rent a second size in the same dress for FREE!

Rent The Runway is a seriously great tool for budgeting fashionistas. Plus, the customer service is awesome and reviews are super helpful. Real customers leave a few comments about the dress and how it fits, so you can decide if that style will work for you. And in all honesty, every dress I’ve ever rented has been in great shape (I was a little worried that they would look a little “worn” but each one has showed up on my doorstep bascially pristine…)

So there you have it, womanistas. Flawless couture at your fingertips, via rental! No need to stress about a big meeting/date/event/birthday dinner ensemble. Rent the Runway has got your back!

xo, the Womanista

I cosign on RTR…last year my husband and I went to eight (!) weddings and instead of having to buy new dresses for the weddings and rehearsal dinners, I rented from RTR. Every dress I got was perfect and it was so convenient. The dresses even come with a bag of “tricks” that you might need (double stick tape, safety pins, stain remover, etc). Plus there is great selection and the latest styles. Highly recommend!
