London is the city that put “cool” on the map. It is cosmopolitan and fashion-forward, yet impossibly cool and relaxed. It’s one of my favorite cities in the world for many reasons, one of which is the fact that at 4-5PM, pretty much everyone heads to a pub, stands on the sidewalk and drinks a beer. How cool and relaxed is that?? Plus, the tabloids are less Kim Kardashian, and more “random cousin of so-an-so Duke just graduated with a degree in math”. At least it’s not Snooki! So cool. If London were a restaurant, in all its coolness, it would be the dining room at Dean Street Townhouse.
My fabulous (and also impossibly cool!) friend Ashlea and her husband live in London and suggested we have dinner somewhere fun and chic. Dean Street Townhouse was just the place.
Dean Street Townhouse is a 39-room hotel and restaurant tucked into London’s vibey Soho neighborhood. Its pedigree comes from two distinctively cool (and successful) London restauranteurs & nightlife impressarios, Nick Jones of the Soho House and Richard Caring of The Ivy. Needless to say, its cool-factor is in the genes (or rather, the business & design savvy of its owners!)
The dark, candlelit interior is buzzy and warm without being stuffy. The walls are adorned with the works of contemporary British artists, some super famous (hello, Peter Blake!) and other prints from up-and-coming artists. The menu is decidedly “modern british” ranging from Cornish Sardines on Toast with Lemon & Parsley to Fish & Chips with Mushy Peas…literally, it says “mushy peas” on the menu! It’s also seriously delicious. The service is impeccable – knowledgeable, friendly, and fast, but not rushed.
We settled in for a long meal that began with martinis and a “British meat board”, and wound down with wine and chocolate malt brownie ice cream. All of it, fantastic!
The dining room truly evokes a warmth while still being “cool” – a place where you can catch up with friends, have a great cocktail and meal, laugh, and relax.
Just like the city of London.
Happy London dining, womanistas!
