Womanista Food+ Drink: Election Day Cocktails

My dear womanistas, it is a MAJOR day for us. It’s election day! Today is a day that will not only change the course of history and our lives for the next four years, but it is also a day that American women should embrace for all those who fought so hard to give us this right.

Did you know that women have only been allowed to vote on all platforms in the United States since 1920?? YES, crazy! Let’s also remember all of the brave men and women who have fought for our country since its creation in order to preserve the freedoms that we have, including our freedom at the polls. So please vote today. Honor our freedom in this country. Make your voice heard.

…and have a cocktail! These awesome (and delish!) election day cocktails are from the mixologists at the uber cool “Haven Rooftop Lounge” at the Sanctuary Hotel in New York City. If you are a New Yorker, please visit your local restaurants and bars this week! Haven is hosting a viewing party tonight and you can sip these fab cocktails, and dress up to show your support for your favorite candidate! This is an easy (and fun!) way to come together and support your community after the devastation of hurricane sandy.

(And on a side note: Please know that this womanista, and all of the Nashville womanistas are thinking about everyone in the Northeast! When our fair city flooded in May 2010, it was devastating…but let us encourage you to work together in the clean up and it will be better! We promise! xo)

But seriously, on to the cocktails…

Politically Correct Martini (P.C. Martini)

4 oz. ice

1 oz. Vodka

2 oz. Pineapple Juice

3 tbsp. Coco Lopez coconut milk

1 oz. Half and Half

Pour into Martini glass. Pour 1/2 Tbsp. almond flavored liqueur so that it sinks to the bottom. Lightly pour 1/2 Tbsp. Blue Curacao along rim of glass, so that it floats on top to create red, white, and blue layers. Voila!

1 oz Cayrum

1 tsp Blue Curacao

0.5 oz Elderflower Liqueur

0.5 oz  Lemon Juice

1 Dash bitters

Blend all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Pour over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with cherries.

Right Wing Slinger

1.5 Parts Stoli Citrus Vodka

2 Parts Club Soda

2 Parts Cranberry

.5 Part Simple Syrup

Juice of half a lime

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and mix. Pour over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with blueberries.

Happy Election day, womanistas! Please go out and exercise your right to vote!!

xo, the Womanista
