Womanista Gift Guide: Charitable Gifts

You know how people say that giving a gift is more satisfying than receiving one? I definitely feel that way. Especially when giving a gift that also does some good in the world! This year there are so many great, gorgeous gifts that also help out someone in need. Give a gift that gives back and make a difference! Here are a few that I am adding to my list…

A FashionABLE Scarf: These gorgeous hand-crafted scarves are made by some beautiful ladies in Ethiopia. Each scarf comes with a handwritten note from the woman who made it stating why purchasing that scarf has helped her.

For instance, the Bezuayhu scarf (pictured at right) might let you know that because you purchased that scarf, she can look forward to her future. Or that she feels confident.  It’s inspiring and wonderful. Plus, each scarf is chic and fashionable! The Bezuayhu scarf is available for $28.

Trish McEvoy “Be Prepared” Beauty Emergency Card for Lips: If you are anything like me, you probably have about 10 random lip glosses of various shades floating around in your purse right now…I like to be prepared!

This lip palette is the perfect solution to having a cluster of extraneous lipsticks! It offers eight beautiful shades and fits seamlessly in a small space (box clutch, anyone??) The company is also donating the proceeds of this product to The Girl Scouts of America (who are the epitome of preparedness!) Pick up this great gift for all of your beauty-junky friends for $30.

Thistle Farms Holiday Candle: These gorgeous candles are handcrafted by the ladies of Magdalene in Nashville, TN. If you aren’t familiar with Magdalene, it’s a residential program that gives women support & shelter who are recovering from lives of prostitution, abuse, addiction and life on the streets. Through this social enterprise, these women learn valuable life skills and create beautiful, natural bath and body products. One of my favorite products offered by Thistle Farms is this limited edition holiday candle. It smells absolutely delicious, and it is an honor to help the woman who created it!

Laura Shull for LS Designs Bracelet: This fabulous, handcrafted bracelet is made of genuine leather, 19 turquoise beads and one coral bead. The beads represent the sobering statistic that one in 20 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

The bracelet is available for purchase for $25, and 50% of the proceeds go to the “Fight Colorectal Cancer” organization. This is personally very important to me following my dad’s cancer diagnosis in September 2009. We can all fight for a cure, and wear a stylish piece of jewelry while we’re at it! You can email Lauren Shull directly to purchase the bracelet at Lkok@aol.com, and also check it out on her facebook page!

Beats By Dr. Dre Solo HD (Product)Red Headphones: These headphones are the best ever. Seriously. The sound that comes through is super pure, rich, and exactly how the artist wants you to hear his/her/their music when it gets recorded. And FYI, this is a big deal to musicians who spend literally hours in the studio “dialing up tones” (yes, that’s fancy studio speak for “making the sounds of each instrument perfect”) to make sure they capture the right emotion/texture/idea of each song.

For each set of headphones sold, Beats by Dr. Dre is donating $5 to the Product(Red) Global Fund. So why not give back AND hear your music perfectly?? Sounds like a good deal to me! They are available from HSN for $199.

Happy gift giving, womanistas! I hope you take a moment this holiday season to either give a gift that gives back, or simply make a donation to your favorite charitable organization. Every single dollar counts! In the spirit of the season, let’s all try our best to help one another!

xo, the Womanista
