Womanista Travel: Packing for Hawaii, San Francisco, Australia, Napa

Tomorrow I leave Nashville for the last portion of my husband’s 2012 world tour. We’re heading to San Francisco, Hawaii, Australia, and ending up in Napa Valley. Otherwise known as, the best trip ever!! There is one little interesting detail about this trip: We are literally traveling through every single season and packing is tricky!

San Francisco is in the midst of a beautiful autumn, Hawaii is tropical and summery, and Australia is just leaving winter behind and welcoming spring. So, what in the world does this womanista need to pack??

I’ve come up with a few must-have staples…

Light-weight Leather Jacket: Leather jackets are so incredibly versatile. You can throw one on over jeans and a t-shirt for instant cool, or over a cocktail dress for a modern, downtown look. Plus, they always look chic. I love this one from Zara because it has a textured, motorcycle style and it’s a great price at $189.

I am also obsessed with this one from Carven – it’s super-feminine and flattering. The nude color goes with everything, but doesn’t feel as heavy and wintery as black.  It’s on sale, but still a bit of an investment piece at about $715.

Bright, Flattering Bathing Suit: Nothing says “Waikiki Beach” like a fabulous bikini. My favorite bathing suits, HANDS DOWN, are made by Luli Fama. The colors are always gorgeous and the fit is so incredibly flattering.

Since the last time I checked, I have never been featured in the Sports Illustrated “Swimsuit Edition”, or in a Victoria’s Secret catalogue, the cut and fit of a bathing suit need to be right in order for me to flaunt my stuff along the beach. Just trust me on this womanistas, Luli Fama’s are fabulous.

I love this one in bright emerald because it will look great with my skin tone and blond hair. If you have a darker complextion, try a bright pink or cerulean blue.

A Printed Blouse: Prints are so big this season, and I am basically a printed blouse junky. You can’t go wrong with a silky, printed top from Tucker. You can wear it during the day, paired with jeans or shorts and flats as you explore the city, and then transition it for evening, paired with dark skinnies, a statement necklace and stilettos.

I have also been rocking my python-print blouse from Equipment everywhere lately. This piece is definitely making the trip across the ocean. The print gives it some texture, and it goes with pretty much everything in my wardrobe! Plus, the fabric is super-lightweight and great for layering.

A Detailed Tote Bag: I am in love with my new “Koh Samui” Tote from Deux Lux. The mint green canvas and sequin combo make my heart skip a beat (and my favorite color is sparkle, so it had me from first sheen!)

It will be absolutely perfect for long hours of travel, and I can throw everything in there from my computer (I never want to be too far away from you, womanistas!!) to a cozy scarf, and my husband’s random gear that he tends to pick up in airports (he has never met a “Lids” store that he didn’t patronize…)

This tote will also be perfect to load up with sunscreen, magazines, and a towel and hit the beaches of Hawaii in style!

So there you have it, womanistas. My must-haves for multi-climate travel. I can’t wait to share pictures, details, and fabulous finds from these far-flung locales! Is there anything I should definitely do/see in Melbourne, Brisbane, or Sydney? Fill me in!!

xo, the Womanista

I can totally relate to your dilemma everything I have to pack up for my summer holidays here in Australia for a quick trip back to Malaysia before heading over to winter/snowy Europe! Love the Zara jacket you recommended.

As for places to check out in Sydney (since I’ll be going there for the concert – yay!), the last time I was in Sydney, my cousin took me to this Japanese restaurant called Uchi Lounge which is at Surry Hills. Thought it was a nice place and its pretty chilled out. But like you, I think I would need to find out about more places to check out when I’m Sydney (since I’m from tiny ol’ Adelaide). I’ve been told that Aria is a nice place to dine at and it’s near the Opera House.

Love your post and hopefully I’ll get to meet you in Sydney xx

Have a fabulous trip. I am a huge fan. I live in Napa and was SO excited when Lady A was the #1 auction bid at the Wine Auction. I wish I knew those people, so I could be there. Have a fabulous time. October is BEAUTIFUL in Napa.

YES! It’s a great size and the mint color is surprisingly neutral. You can order one from Haven, too :-) They carry that line of bags!

I clicked on the Zara jacket and I think you just found me the leather jacket I’ve been looking for. I tried to walk to the Zara near my office, alas I didn’t realize it’s not open yet. Have an awesome trip! I second checking out Bourbon & Branch for a cocktail.

Farallon in San Francisco is amazing, top to bottom. It’s right off of Union Square and the perfect place for seafood! Also close by is First Crush, a great romantic spot to grab a glass of wine. Have fun Cass!

Thanks, Julie!! I will check them out. I’m excited! xx

Today is definitely perfect packing weather! Love your site. I’m supposed to be planning a January trip and reading your blog has inspired me to get started. I’m definitely checking out the Viceroy Anguilla! Thanks! Thought I’d return the favor with two San Fran. recommendations.

    Restaurant for dinner:
Spruce- Great atmosphere, wonderful service/sommelier/food! If they have them, truffles over homemade pasta are a must. One of the best restaurant recommendations I’ve gotten in a long time. It made my foodie heart happy! A bit off the beaten path, but beyond worth it!

    Speakeasy:
Bourbon and Branch: Just plain fun.

Oh fabulous!!! I’ll check it out. I am not a truffle fan (I know, crazy!) but homemade pasta is right up my alley, and so is a speakeasy :-) Thanks, Kate! xx
