Womanista Wish List: What I’m Loving This Week

In honor of the last week of August, I decided to make a list of some things that I am absolutely loving! The air is getting cooler, fall fashion is heating up, and Labor Day is on the horizon (and hopefully all of you are planning fun and safe celebrations with friends and family! I know I am…) So let’s get down to the fabulousness!

Mocha Club 7th Anniversary Party: Sometimes it’s hard to think about making a charitable donation when you can barely afford to pay your own rent, or splurge on name-brand toilet paper! (This was me not too long ago – with my first job out of college paying me exactly $1,606 every month after taxes, and yes, I lived in New York City!) But The Mocha Club makes it easy to make a difference in someone’s life on a shoestring budget. For $7 a month (roughly the cost of two mochas at starbucks!) you can provide someone with clean drinking water. Allow an orphan to have safe housing. Give a woman who was formerly forced into prostitution, a job and counseling.

For all of these reasons and so much more, it’s my honor to celebrate 7 years of The Mocha Club on Tuesday, August 28th! The party will feature some awesome artists playing amazing live music (Hello, Dave Barnes & Matt Wertz!) and I also get to help showcase the Fall 2012 collection of FashionABLE scarves (I mean, what’s better than helping others, a party, and a fashion show?? Pretty much womanista heaven right there…)

Pink Papaya Products: I just discovered this fabulous spa & beauty product line from two equally fabulous ladies! Their mission is to develop products that women love and feel great about, and also to give back to the community through philanthropy programs. What’s better than looking and feeling great, and helping other women in the process??  My faves from the line are the lavender sweet orange body cream (It’s so fabulous and it smells absolutely DELICIOUS!) and the Super Gloss in “Charming” – it’s the perfect pale pink for your pout!

Weekend Glow Kale Salad: In September 2009 my dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver. It was bad but our family never lost hope. After 3 years of highs, lows, great doctors, prayer, love, kind nurses at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, and the miracle of God’s healing, he is feeling better than ever! So this year on the day of his diagnosis we are having a party (a Backyard BBQ!) to celebrate his life and healing. I’m going to make this healthy, delicious kale salad – a recipe I found on this FABULOUS healthy-eating blog featuring vegan recipes “Oh She Glows” –  to accompany my dad’s award-winning BBQ ribs (yes, they are literally award winning. They just took 3rd place in a BBQ competition!) Kale is super-rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins – just want the body needs to fight disease and heal. (Take that, cancer!)

Giuseppe Zanotti Metal-Heel Suede Pumps: I.AM.OBSESSED.WITH.THESE. SHOES. The rich purple hue! The metallic heel! The sexy peep toe! All shoe porn for this womanista.

Spot the Charley: My sister is fabulous and witty and has a dog named Charley, who looks like he is always smiling. She just started this blog about their life together and it has the CUTEST photos of little Charley. Her husband and their other dog, Jake, also make appearances. Basically, it’s funny-cuteness overload! You can follow here: http://spotthecharley.wordpress.com/

I hope you have a great week, womanista! Can you believe it’s almost labor day?? Can’t wait to welcome the fall season with all of you!

xo, the Womanista

I love that you still remember how much you started making in NYC! Did you have an apartment alone? How did you do it comfortably? Living in Nashville now but wanting to make the move to Brooklyn… but too chicken about salaries, etc.
